A Word For Living – Caleb

gadsdenOn December 30, 1853 the last addition to the Continental United States was added when Santa Ana sold a narrow strip of desert land to the United States for Ten Million Dollars. The Gadsden purchase, as it became known, completed the boundaries of the lower forty-eight states.

Even though the property was owned by the United States, travel throughout the region was not safe. Apache Indians resisted the incursion into the region by Anglos and many years passed before settlers felt safe.

People continued to brave the dangers of hostile Indians, adverse weather, and debilitating disease to settle that part of the country, and through much heartbreak and sacrifice the area become a viable and inviting place.

Today we seem to think that we should achieve success and acclaim without such pain and sacrifice. The discipline, drive, and commitment necessary to settle the wild Southwest is still necessary should we desire to leave behind a legacy of achievement and success. I’m encouraged when I read the Old Testament story of Caleb. He believed God to be leading the children of Israel, and even at the advanced age of eighty-five, determined to conquer the hostile heights of Hebron. Scripture tells us in Joshua 14:6-15 of his faith and courage.

I pray that God will give to you a fresh vision of His will for your life and that you will not allow age, circumstance, or convenience to deter you from fulfilling His will for your life.
